Tom Nugent Writes About Appalachia in Huffington Post

September 5, 2011

Did you read journalist/author Tom Nugent’s front-page story a couple of weeks ago in the Huffington Post: As U.S. Energy Companies Blow-Up Appalachian Mountaintops, the Nation’s Lawmakers Yawn With Indifference?  (Here’s a link to the story: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/tom-nugent.)

The HuffPo story documents how some of America’s largest energy companies have been blowing up the mountains of Appalachia in order to maximize their coal profits via “mountaintop removal mining” – with horrific results (including environmental degradation and rising cancer rates).

As the story points out, the bottom line is that nothing has changed in Appalachia during recent years; the exploitation of the region’s natural resources and its human workforce continues to wreak havoc on this once beautiful region of our country.
